NUNO SOTA | RODAGIRA
Who is Nuno Sota. What is your background?
Hello. I’m the 38 years oldportuguese guy behind Bici RodaGira.
My background is basically the DIY punk hardcore scene. In the 80s, my old brother introduced me into
skateboarding and heavy metal music. Then i got more and more into punk and the DIY culture. Soon i was
organizing shows and tours, releasing records, creating bands and writing Zines.
How starts Roda Gira?
Urban cycling is something not very popular in Portugal. But some years ago (like everywhere) the fixedgear
scene appeared in Portugal. Some friends started building their own bikes using old portuguese steel racing
bicycles. Everyone used to have an old bicycle somewhere, from the father, the uncle or even the
grandparents. In that period i did the same, i got an old frame for 50€ and then i spent 100€ on a velocity
rear track wheel. But the main problem for people who want to build their own bikes is that almost any shop
wont understand what you are trying to buy and build. Most of the shops where focused on mountain bike
and they never heard of a track hub.
I started importing parts and components to build bikes for me and friends. Later i quit my job and decided to
do it full time.

Tell us about of the your frames, where is manufactured and which material uses.
We used to produce the first frames in taiwan. We first made an 6061 aluminium model and a lugged
cromoly 4130.
Then a second tig steel frame that remains untill today, with the name “LX2” and a 1-1/8 fork.
We also did some titanium prototypes but at the moment they are in stand by. We need to spend more time
on these.
Our must famous frame is Zorlac/Zorlac2 (a tribute to zorlac skateboards). It is our own geometry produced
in Polland with 7005 aluminium and Columbus Tusk Straight carbon fork. The triangle tubes and agressive
look turn it into a instant classic on the streets all over the world.
Then we have the Arrogante – produced in Italy, a frame made with Columbus Airplane tubes and Columbus
Pista Leggera fork. A true track machine with a 35mm fork, short clearances and high bottom bracket – now
proudly being used by four teams: Disorderly Habits, Velo Cycles Crew, Crank Shift NYC and U-Lock Justice
Crew.
Pretty soon we will introduce a new aluminium frame. It will be a mix between Zorlac and Arrogante with a
clean look.
We really don't want to produce a lot of frames. We are more focused on quality over quantity. That’s the
main reason why we are always able to discuss the frame design and paintjob with our customers.
Why Fixed gear frames? Why you made this choice?
Because all this RodaGira thing started with fixedgear. That's the bicycle i love to ride. The simplicity of the
machine turns it into something beautiful. We have our roots on the suburbs and street culture, so fixedgear
frames as a culture are tottally related with this.
Is there any project to build road or cyclocross frames in the next future?
Since the beginning lots of friends asked that question. Things need time to happen and we want to do
things step by step but for now i can tell you that we are working one something for the upcomming winter.
You’ve been inspired by great artisans and brands of the past to realize your project?
Yes! Like i told before, one thing that we really take care on our frames is producing our own geometry and
designs.
For great geometry we have to take a look at the old masters that produced great track frames. The classics
gives us all the information we need to do a true track machine!
And all the designs are inspired by our background: punk and metal records; skateboards, surf brands;
horror movies, etc..
Roda Gira will take part at the RED HOOK CRIT series with a factory team?
Yes, for London, Barcelona and Milan. We will have two portuguese guys racing as Team Roda Gira – Cesar
Modesto and Manuel Lino.
The fixed gear is constantly growing. Your point of view.
Some years ago Fixed gear become very popular with all those colorfull and cheap parts. The fixed gear as
a urban culture became pretty big with fixed gear freestyle and bike polo. For some people it was a trend or
a hype but in fact it introduced a lot of people into cycling and i have no doubt all this fixed gear culture
brought a lot of new blood to the cycling industry.
After that, with people more involved around cycling, fixed gear started growing more into a competitive
sport.
I think the soul and strength of the fixed gear is the fact that a lot of brands and companys belong to kids who love it, so we are always reinventing it in our own way.
What is the future of your company and the goals that you want to achieve?
We will see what future will bring us. We are working hard but as i said before, we want do it step by step.
Our biggest goal is to continue to produce quality frames and sell them all over the world. Getting good
feedback and keeping a friendly relation with almost every costumer. We know this is a industry full of
sharks, but we prefer to dream and work on our own level and things will happen.
Thanks Andrea for this space on your awesome page. Keep up the good work.

RS ACERO CYCLES x OLD HABITS
RS ACERO CYCLES x OLD HABITS
About a year ago, Reyes (Rs Acero Cycles) and me (Old Habits), get known in Logroño (La RIoja) where we live.
After some days talking about handmade bicycles and the cycling nowadays we talked about making a collaboration between us.
These collabo will be about making a special track bike frame with a custom geometry especially design for criterium races.
Some months later, we begin to work on this project.
First of all, we talk with ATC Drones in order to make a documental to present the bike all over Spain.
After having our parts set, we began looking for sponsors to make this project possible.
After some conversations with some brands we reach: Levis Commuter Bizipoza Knog Essax Saddle Mission Workshop ATC Drones Catlike Pacific and Co Arrueda Factory Five .
After several weeks working with Reyes at the workshop, filming almost daily we´ve test the bike without the final set up. It was awesome.
We sent the frame to Fullcabron, a paint job studio in La Rioja as well. The result was amazing.
The bike shines at the sun, agile, fast and really nervous.
After that, we began to assembly in Bizipoza (San Sebastian).
The frame-set is on sale (info in our mail).
We are going to make a new frame-set with a full carbon fork and really wide tubes. With this bike we are going to race most of Spanish criteriums and the RHC in Barcelona.

MY OWN TEAM | NVAYRK
We are a creative cycling project founded in Brooklyn, New York, representing and connecting different cultures around the world. Currently based out of New York, London and Mexico City.
From day one, everything that has occurred came from a desire to celebrate the power and talent of people as individuals and the fight to create your own journey.
Each project that we engage in comes from the connections we have with like-minded people with whom we have crossed paths and who have become like family. Whether it is through the mutual respect and admiration of cycling and creativity or the desire to support a person with potential and drive.
We value people who genuinely contribute to the culture from which they come. These people, experienced or novices, give us the strength for the project. We respect and admire these people and, ultimately, we love working with them.
We have established our identity by bringing together the essence and the core of different cultures for a single project.
We combine all of the necessary elements to contribute to the growth of unique cultures and to have results that change the way people think about cycling. Results that encourage the cycling community to grow.
We aspire to meet people as passionate about cycling and creativity as we are.
It is a great privilege to channel all of this energy to support people who are looking to offer more to this culture… this movement and this way of life.
There is something pretty amazing about being able to give back to the culture and community of the city. To see it flourish through perseverance, hard work and dedication of the people who are involved in this project and who have made our vision possible.

CLEPTOMANICX | HARDBRAKERS
Since, we are not the typical bike crew we weren’t satisfied with the typical bike wear available. The first steps of realizing our visions and designs were the jersey & bib we produced exclusively for ourselves with a print related to the destinations of each year’s bike trip (Budapest-Istanbul, Lisboa-Marrakesh and Warsaw-Helsinki). But the deficit of functional bike clothing that has a more appealing and street wear orientated look motivated us to create apparel, that is functional on the bike, but still has enough style to wear it on a date, at a bar or in the club. With the Hamburg based street wear label Cleptomanicx we found the perfect partner to realize our visions and ideas. Besides the same hometown we also have the same mindset when it comes to apparel.

These are the maximes of this collaboration. Our first product is the Commuter Hoody. It’s cut a bit longer than the average hoody, so it keeps your back ‘n’ butt covered when you ride deep on the drops. Same goes for the sleeves which also have ventilation holes in the armpit area. Furthermore the hood has an integrated wind mask and there are two bicycle jersey pockets on the back with additional features.

TEAM CRETINS
What is “Team Cretins”?
Team Cretins is a group of cyclists who strive and ride to have a positive impact on our communities. Our primary focus is our participation in the AIDS/LifeCycle. The AIDS/LifeCycle is a 545 mile ride from San Fransisco to Los Angeles. The ride has thousands of participants each year and has become the worlds single largest HIV/AIDS fundraising event. Last year the ride raised over $16.6 Million dollars for the fight against HIV/AIDS. In the 21 year history of the AIDS/LifeCycle, Team Cretins is the first and only fixed gear only team. Our first year with 5 riders we raised a little over $17k. Our second year with 12 riders we raised over $42k. This year with 14 riders we have a goal of $65k and we have already raised over $22k!
When and how is born?
Team Capt, Rob Brouillard, did the ride on his own in 2013. The positivity and love of the ride inspired Rob so much, he returned and sold his car to buy more bikes. Rob recruited 4 friends from The Cretins bicycle club to join him on this epic adventure.
Why ” CRETINS”?
The first incarnation of Team Cretins consisted of riders from The Cretins. The Cretins formed 15 years ago in San Diego. Co-founded by Team Cretins co-captain, Ronnie Shaw. Ronnie and friends took the name ‘The Cretins’ from the Troma film ‘Class Of Nuke ‘Em High’ which featured a gang of weirdos who torment the school. The name stuck and The Cretins began regularly hosting fun, costume clad, group rides in San Diego such as The Lord of the Flies Ride, Full Moon Ride, Bike Prom, Punk Olympics. We still host these and similar events in San Diego. Costumes, bike games, and good friends. We always have fun.
What is your relationship with the bicycle and why you choose it to spread your message?
We LOVE our bikes and we love to ride.
Do you think that the problem of A.I.D.S. and the attention on it, is less than in the past?
Its easy to think that HIV/AIDS is no longer a problem. Medications have come a long way, and people are living longer, healthier lives. This is whey the work of the ALC and is beneficaries, The San Fransisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center are so vital. These agencies continue to provide the critical services and education needed to meet the growing needs of our community. We ride to raise to raise awareness and knowledge about HIV/AIDS among our community and donors. We ride because, in the current economy, the SF AIDS Foundation and the LA LGBT Center need the funds more than ever. Ultimately we ride so that someday we won’t have to.
The cost associated with medical care and treatment for a person with HIV are about $20,000 per year. Access to live-saving drugs, clinical trials and state-of-the-art treatment helps those with the disease live a longer and better quality live. AIDS/LifeCycle helps those living with HIV/AIDS gain greater independence and get the treatment they need. Prevention services geared towards high-risk populations will ensure that future generations will not experience the same level of loss that we have faced in the last two decades. The ride ends when AIDS does.
In which way you raise fund to support your cause?
We raise funds in several different ways. Social media has become a great tool for fundraisng. With all the negativity and complaining going on its easy to offer people a break from that shit. We all get wound up when we see certain articles or hear about shitty going-ons in the world. Instead of getting upset and frustrated at the things we can’t change, people can join us in seeing an end to HIV/AIDS without pedaling an inch! Making a donation gives people the opportunity to actually make a change and help improve the quality of life for those who so desperately need it.
We also throw fundraising races and parties. Every alley cat we throw turns into a charitable ‘Party-Cat’! We want people to come to our events and have a great time! Its also a great opportunity for the community to come together and make a difference. We have found that those who have the least, give the most.
Many donations also come in from the Team simply talking about the ride with people we meet. Often times you tell someone you’re riding a bike with one gear and no free-wheel from SF to LA and they get interested. It also gives us an opportunity to remind people that HIV/AIDS are still a pandemic and we all have a chance to do something about it, weather its a $10 or $1000 dollar donation, every penny counts.
Do you have any sponsors that support your mission?
We have received helping hands from so many amazing and generous companies along our journey. The two that really stick out are Retrogression and The Heavy Pedal. Its very easy for our groups to work together and we are all like minded. Both Retrogression and The Heavy Pedal are grass roots. No rich mommies or daddies gave them their start or success. They embody the DIY mindset and both provide incredible service and products. Much love for them here.

ARNON FISHER | MIDDLEASTA
How starts Gordon Bennett Cycle Workshop?
As a fixed gear rider I couldn’t find a bike shop that could relate to my bike issues.. I found myself working on my bike and looking for solutions by myself. I noticed that all bike shops re specializing on pro cycling or weekenders and not on urban and commuters so I decided to open the shop.
Tell us about of the project ” Middleasta”
Middleasta is my life work. As an urban rider I always looked for the best riding experience. I tried all kind of bikes, aluminum, carbon, steel, plastic, titanium, everything.
Each of those materials have their benefits but I found that magnesium is the best of all.
Your frame is made of magnesium tubing. Why not aluminum or steel? Why did you made this choice?
It’s like magnesium took all other material advantages and combined them into one crazy metal. It’s a light alloy, strong and responsive yet flexible and pleasant. It’s like magic .
I designed the frames to be both aggressive and comfort.
You can ride fast as hell in a competitive mode and slow and easy in a smooth city mode.
Your frames are manufactured in Israel?
This is the reason I called it “middleasta”, the raw material is produced from the depths of the Dead Sea, processed in Haifa bay (northern part of Israel), designed and build by me in Tel Aviv. This is a proud Israeli production. Not so many to be proud of nowadays… Middleasta is rough, bold, fresh and creative mostly because of the geographical reasons.
Have You been inspired by great artisans and brands of the past to realize your project?
I’m a huge fan of the Italian frame builders and brands. Colnago in particular. I looked at Italian frame geometries, looked at catalogues and products and they definitely inspired me but since middleasta frames are full custom made they totally original and tubes angles and lengths are 100% unique.
Tell us about your country, Israel.
Well, Israel is not an easy place to live in. political issues are always our main concern.
But it’s not only what you see on TV. When you look at the micro and see the small resolution you see that people from all political views wants peace and quiet. Our politicians are not reflecting Israeli society.
Tel Aviv the city where you live.
Yeah. Tel Aviv is amazing. You have nice beaches and the weather is great. It’s mostly flat so no uphills or extreme downhills and the night scene is providing best experiences.
How is developed the fixed gear movement and the bicycle culture in general?
When I opened the shop, 8 years ago, we were 4 fixed gear riders in Israel 🙂 now there are hundreds of them and it keeps growing. It seems that urban cycling and commuters have much more impact nowadays and it feels like it’s a cultural marker to other urban disciplines.
Racing low pro is the only trademark of the company?
No. you can have a classic geometry style middleasta and ladies model.
Is there any project to build road or any different type of frame in the next future?
Yes. I build road bikes as well and now I’m designing a CXSS frame which will be ready for the next CX season. Magnesium frame for a CX will be a killer. I sure of it.
The fixed gear is constantly growing. Criteriums, Alleycats are a big part of this success. Your point of view.
Of course. People want to be a part of a community. They look for common ground and search to share their interests with others. Events, races, parties and shows are the exact places where you can stay connected and updated with physical and actual connections and not virtual.
What is the future of your company? What are the goals that you want to achieve?
I’m starting to build a simple and more affordable bike. The frame will be made of steel.
With a target price of 500$ I think more people will enjoy to be a part of the middleasta community.
And of course I was hoping to reach to other markets other then Israel. My product is amazing and I think people must check it out.
